  3. AI Resources for Clinicians

Medicine is entering a new era: One where AI isn’t just a buzzword but a daily presence in the lives of all healthcare clinicians. That’s why Offcall recently hosted a live webinar entitled "We're Sharing AI Secrets for Clinicians," which featured two of the leading physician voices on the frontlines of AI today: Dr. Graham Walker, ER physician and co-founder of Offcall, and Dr. Sarah Gebauer, anesthesiologist and founder of Validara Health. Longtime friends and Stanford med school classmates, Graham and Sarah brought humor, expertise, and a grounded perspective to a rapidly evolving topic.

The goal of their presentation is to demystify AI for busy clinicians and provide practical tools to navigate this moment of transformation. Throughout the session, Graham and Sarah unpacked the real-world impact of AI in clinical practice, offering a blend of foundational education, cautionary guidance, and hands-on tips. From scribes to predictive alerts and chatbots, they also explored where AI is already showing up in healthcare and what physicians should be asking before they hit “accept” on the next tool.

A few of the most essential takeaways from the conversation included:

  • AI Is Already Here — You Just Might Not Know It
From Netflix to your EHR, AI is already embedded in tools you use every day. Understanding how it works helps demystify it and identify opportunities for smarter use in clinical care.
  • Know Your AI Types: Generative vs. Deterministic
Generative AI (like ChatGPT) excels at summarization and communication tasks; deterministic AI is better suited for reliable, repeatable outputs like dosing or early warning systems. Each has its place in the care ecosystem.
  • Use Cases Are Expanding Rapidly
AI scribes, risk prediction tools, and administrative automations are already lightening the load for some clinicians. The best systems augment your clinical brain — not replace it.
  • Ask the Hard Questions Before You Adopt
Does it integrate with your workflow? Has it been validated in your patient population? Is the model transparent and auditable? These questions should guide adoption.
  • Bias and Hallucinations Are Real Risks
AI models are trained on biased data and can confidently generate false information. Know when to trust — but always verify.
  • Over-Reliance Can Weaken Clinical Judgment
As with any tool, using AI too much can dull your instincts. Think of it as a support system, not a substitute for your medical expertise.
  • Legal and Ethical Guardrails Are Still Being Built
Consent laws vary by state, and questions around liability, standard of care, and malpractice remain unresolved. Physicians must stay informed and engaged.
  • Start Small, Even Outside of Medicine
Use AI tools at home: Generate coloring pages, summarize news, or plan meals. You’ll build confidence and intuition that translates to clinical uses.
  • Clinicians Need to Lead the Conversation
AI is being implemented with or without physician input. Get involved in hospital AI committees, test tools, and advocate for patient-centered design.

Below you’ll find a comprehensive list or resources curated by Graham and Sarah which includes AI scribe vendors, prompt templates, healthcare AI newsletters, and beginner-friendly tools to start exploring AI in both clinical and nonclinical settings. Whether you’re looking to get smarter about prompting or lead your department’s AI integration strategy, this is a helpful starting point.
