Case Study: How Auro Health Is Using Offcall’s Trusted Physician Network for Referrals

As part of our mission to lift up Columbus clinicians, each week we’ll feature a different clinician who’s having an incredible impact in the community and also passionate about Offcall’s mission. This week, meet Dr. Ujjwal Ramtekkar from Auro Health. Like what you read? Try sending him a message (or referral) directly on the Offcall app!

1. Ujjwal, what is the most frustrating part of sending and receiving referrals and building your network as an independent physician? The black hole! You send a referral, and you have no idea what happens next: did the patient get seen, did the office even receive it, did they end up somewhere appropriate? As an independent psychiatrist, I don't have a giant health system's directory or a referral coordinator chasing things down. I'm relying on fax numbers, outdated websites, and whoever a colleague happened to mention at a conference two years ago. And on the receiving side, I'm getting one-line faxes with no context, from people I've never spoken to, for patients whose clinical picture I can't fully see. The whole system runs on phone tag, outdated faxes, guesswork, and (a lot of) goodwill.

2. What made you decide to use Offcall as your new referral and networking solution, and what was the moment you knew you needed a better way? The moment was a patient, a high-performing professional, who I'd referred to an endocrinologist eight weeks earlier and assumed was being treated. She showed up to a follow-up still untreated, still struggling, because the referral had quietly fallen off a fax queue somewhere. Nobody dropped the ball maliciously. The system just didn't have a way to surface that the ball had been dropped. I decided then that I wasn't going to keep outsourcing my patients' continuity of care to a 1980s workflow. Offcall stood out because it was built by clinicians who actually practice, the testimonials are real physicians I respect and it solves the right problem the right way: a verified, clinician-only community where I can actually KNOW the people I'm referring to, not just their name on a directory.

3. When you think about the impact that Offcall can have on your practice, what gets you most excited? The community! Independent medicine doesn't survive on transactions, it survives on trust between clinicians who know each other's work, judgment, and values. Offcall is the first tool that's actually building that. I'm watching a real circle of trusted colleagues form across Columbus and beyond; primary care, specialists, fellow psychiatrists, people whose clinical reasoning I trust the way I'd trust a partner down the hall in a group practice I never had. That's what gets me up in the morning about this. When I plan to refer a complex patient, I want to be sending them to a colleague, not a directory listing. Offcall makes that possible for the first time.

4. What would you say to another independent physician who's still managing referrals the old-fashioned way? You're carrying a tax you don't need to carry. Every fax you send, every phone-tag voicemail, every patient who falls through the cracks; that's time and trust you're spending to prop up a broken system, and it's not making your practice stronger. But more importantly: you're missing the community. Independent medicine is harder when you're doing it alone, and Offcall is the first place I've found where independent clinicians are actually building something TOGETHER. It takes 3 minutes to join. Give it a week and you'll wonder how you practiced without your colleagues this close.
