How does job satisfaction differ between men and women physicians – and how does that differ based upon medical specialty?

Offcall is building the world’s largest transparency dataset on physician compensation and workload in the United States, and we’ve begun releasing some of our most impactful findings. For example, we recently explored how physicians feel about overseeing APPs, and looked at the gender pay gap in emergency medicine.

Today, we decided to dig deeper into our job satisfaction data by asking the question: Is there a gap in job satisfaction between men and women physicians across specialties?

What the Data Shows

We ask physicians to rate their job satisfaction on a 1-5 scale. After aggregating these numbers across thousands of data points, we found the largest satisfaction gaps exist in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Analysis and Discussion

In Family Practice, women physicians reported an average satisfaction rating of 3.05 compared to 3.46 for men. For Internal Medicine, women’s average job satisfaction rating was 3.10 compared to 3.42 for men.
