AI can be a powerful tool in clinical practice — but only when it’s used wisely. One misworded prompt can lead to confusing, irrelevant, or even dangerous advice.

At Offcall, we recently hosted a webinar featuring Dr. Graham Walker, Dr. Matthew Sakumoto, and Dr. Kai Romero (Evidently’s Head of Clinical Success) which provided a hands-on deep dive into how physicians can better interact with AI through smarter prompting techniques.

Based on the session, we compiled three of the most common mistakes clinicians make when prompting AI tools, and how to fix them.

Mistake 1: Being Too Vague

"Help me write a note."

This type of prompt leads to generic, bloated content. It lacks structure and direction.

Fix: Add context, format, and tone.

"You are a hospitalist. Draft a SOAP note for a 72-year-old female with CHF exacerbation."
